Diversity and Inclusion

“TEGNA is committed to accelerating the pace of racial diversity across our company and our leadership. The initiatives we began implementing in 2020, with input from our D&I Working Group, have put us on a solid path to reaching our long-term goal of ensuring all TEGNA stations and business units are as diverse as the communities we serve.”

– Grady Tripp, TEGNA Chief Diversity Officer

While we have been proud of our diverse and inclusive culture, the events of 2020 made it clear that we must do more to ensure that our company is truly representative of the diverse communities we serve.

We have undertaken several initiatives to drive meaningful and sustainable progress toward becoming a more inclusive and racially diverse company:

CEO Actions

CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion Pledge: Signed by TEGNA CEO Dave Lougee, the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion Pledge is the largest CEO-driven business commitment to advance diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Board Oversight for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: In 2020, our Board adopted specific areas of oversight for each Board committee regarding the way that TEGNA approaches diversity across a number of different dimensions.

Employee Training: TEGNA newsrooms completed training throughout 2020 to promote media pluralism in both representation and quality of content.

Inclusive Journalism Program: To better represent and serve the communities in which we operate, the Company has developed a multi-year inclusive journalism program working with external partners in which all journalists and marketers will participate.

Unconscious Bias Training: All Company employees will take part in unconscious and implicit bias training.

Diversity & Inclusion Working Group: In June 2020, we launched a Diversity & Inclusion Working Group comprised of employees from across the Company to: increase the Company’s racial diversity in key leadership and influential positions; ensure racially diverse perspectives are respectfully valued, sought after, and embraced and identify and combat inherent unconscious bias through education and training.

Chief Diversity Officer: In September 2020, the Company appoint its first chief diversity officer to drive focus and develop an action plan to ensure our long-standing inclusive values resonate in all areas of our business.

Diversity and Inclusion Goals: With input from our Diversity & Inclusive Working Group and oversight from the Board’s Public Policy and Regulation Committee, we have established multi-year goals to increase Black, Indigenous and People of Color representation in content teams, news leadership and management roles.
